Gravitas Deflexio is a wall sculpture born from a fascination with the unseen forces that govern our physical reality. It draws on a phenomenon from astrophysics in which light bends under the influence of intense gravitational fields — such as those surrounding black holes. This cosmic principle serves as the conceptual foundation for a sculptural inquiry where material, light, and perception engage in a quiet, shifting dialogue.
The sculpture is composed of a stainless steel plate, subtly deformed through a quiet collaboration between human intervention and the pull of the Earth’s gravity. This minimal gesture alters how ambient light is reflected, bending it in unexpected directions. What emerges is a visual experience that shifts depending on the viewer’s position. Light appears to be pulled, warped, pushed away, and even twisted.
Gravitas Deflexio invites viewers into motion and to seek out the angle at which the work reveals itself. Each perspective unveils a different nuance: a distortion, a gleam, a disappearance. In this way, the sculpture is never static and exists only in relation to the gaze and presence of the viewer, unfolding as an intimate and ever-changing encounter.
