Sabullum gutta

Wall sculpture

Paper, vulcanic sand, gum arabic

10,5 x 14,8 cm (w x h)

Sabulum Gutta emerged from material experiments conducted during a residency in New Zealand and was further developed within the context of A6: The Postcard Show at Settantotto Art Gallery in 2026. The work traces a slow dialogue between water and rock. When black volcanic sand is mixed with water, the material briefly regains a liquid state, allowing the sand to flow. This sand–water mixture was applied to paper, drop by drop with a pipette. Some droplets remained isolated; others merged with neighbouring drops, further emphasising the material’s temporary fluidity as a resonance of a state it once possessed. As the water evaporated, the surface solidified into a granular, stone-like residue. Through the restrained, repetitive gestures that shaped the making process, Sabulum Gutta refers to deep geological time, where water and stone engaged in a slow, irreversible exchange that continues to shape the world today.
